Family Fit: 5 Ways to put Spring in Your Step

Now that spring is in the air, it is warm enough to get up and get outside again! The perfect place to start is with the family, but how can you get your kids motivated to join in and get “family-fit” together? We have compiled a list of 5 traditional fitness activities, with fun ways to encourage your children to join in!

Hike:  Why do adults drag themselves up “fourteeners” at the crack of dawn? Well, the hike is made in a large part due to sheer motivation, but I dare you to tell me that you can think of a person who has completed a mountainous climb without a picture at the top of the mountain. A great tradition to start with the family is an award system. Print of a certificate like the one found below, take a picture with your child at the top of the hike, frame the picture, and start a “climbing wall.” Kids are motivated by incentives, and what could be more incentivizing than having a family wall full of photos of great hikes the family has done together?

Bike: Biking is great exercise, but how can you motivate the family to get on those bikes and get moving? Bike somewhere! Tell the kids they can pick where you guys eat dinner every Saturday night – the catch is they have to be willing to bike there! Not only will this start a great family tradition, it will help the family get fit and stay fit together!

Walk: Walking isn’t hard work, but it is a great workout. One way to get your family moving is to make it a competition. Pedometers and some smart phones measure how many steps you take. Set aside time to walk three times a week with your family. Whoever walks the most in those 3 outings wins a prize! The prize can be extra video-game time, a sleepover, or anything that fits with your family. This will encourage a fun and competitive spirit to get your family moving, and might even have your kids (literally) walking circles around you.

Dance: Dance parties never go out of style. Turn off the TV, turn on some tunes, and get boogying! Heck, keep the TV on and start a game with one of the interactive dance platforms that are out there today! This might be the most fun you have ever had exercising with the family.

Run a 5k: This might be an ambitious place to start if your family isn’t in the swing of working out together yet, but it is certainly a goal to work towards! There are tons of family-friendly 5k's during the spring and summer. If you and your family aren’t 5k ready just yet, start with the other activities and work your way up!

Birthday Party Survival Guide - Spring Birthday Ideas

Spring is in the air, and with spring comes… birthdays! It seems during the spring months there are more birthdays to remember, more celebrating to do, and more parties to host. As a parent, this can be exhausting.

That is why we have compiled a list of ideas to keep kids of any age occupied and happy. The good news is that these parties are weather proof! Snow or shine, these ideas are guaranteed to result in a good time.

Snack time: Kids are more likely to argue when they are hungry. As the kids arrive, offer a variety of healthy snacks to fill them up. Make sure to check for allergies before you hand out any of the food! Nobody wants to start off a birthday party with an allergic reaction! (30 minutes)

Play/Pamper time:  Next it is time to let out a little energy. Depending on the theme of the party, play or pamper time may look a little different. If you are having a princess party, this may be a good time to put on some music and play dress up. If you are having a Ninja Turtles party, it may be a good time to build a fort. No matter what type of party you are hosting, it is important to have some activities planned for shortly after the kids start arriving. (30-60 minutes)

Craft time: Craft time is a great go-to once the kids start to get tired of playing. It will keep them preoccupied, and will help calm them down. Keep the craft centered on the party theme, and remind the kids that they are here for a birthday! (30-60 minutes)

Sweets time: The time has come to sing the Happy Birthday song! Light the candles, and watch your little one make a wish. This is the kids’ favorite part of the party, and will give them something to eat as you transition into the next activity! (15-30 minutes)

Presents time: The guests may love sweets time, but presents are surely your child’s favorite part of the party. Make sure that there is a designated area to open presents. Stock this area with pen, paper, and trash bags. Ask one of the parents to help you by writing down the presents and who they are from, while you and the kids gather trash (kids love to make a game out of this, and it will make your life easier if you allow them to help). Have your child thank everyone individually after they open each gift. (15-30 minutes)

Parent pickup: If you are following the designated times, your child’s birthday party will be over approximately 2-3.5 hours after it starts! Parent pickup doesn’t have to come right after the cake, but make sure plan the length of the party, and let parents know when to arrive. When the time does come, make a game of having the kids gather their stuff! Turn on a song and see who can line up at the door with their coats and shoes on, and crafts in hand before the end of it. Once they are lined up, hand out the gift bags!

You did it! Your child will be thankful that they had such a smoothly run birthday party. They may not know it at the time, but it will be YOUR planning that made the difference.

At Believe Kids, we know that planning is important. We value our customers and their time! In the end, we are just a fundraising company that wants to help schools raise money. We hope someday, we get the opportunity to work with you and your family. We promise to give you a fundraising experience that will leave you saying, “WOW!”

Parent Groups go Social: Why Join the Trend?

More and more, schools and parent groups across the country are “going social.” What does this mean? Well, it means that schools and parent groups are leveraging the benefits that social platforms such as Facebook and Pinterest have to offer.

What are some of the benefits of using social platforms? Nearly everyone spends a large chunk of time on some type of social network. By asking parents and staff to follow or “like” your page(s), you will be able to easily capture their attention and hopefully drive the following 3 results:

Get the Word Out: Social networks are a great way to get the word out. Let people know what is happening at your school that day, week, or month! Create social posts that ask people to mark their calendars. Facebook even allows you to create events, and invite people. People will automatically be reminded of events which they have RSVP’d to, which leads to the next benefit!

Boost Participation: With reminders, the ability to see who else from the school is attending an event, and information about what parents can expect from the school or parent group for the next couple of months, social media makes it easy to boost participation. Invite parents to find out more about joining your parent-teacher group. Encourage parents to stay involved with the school and with their child’s life.

Encourage Fundraising: Is your school hosting a gear drive or a fundraiser this year? Help keep the motivation going through social posts! Invite people to participate, announce how much the kids have raised, and remind parents of the bonuses and incentives that come along with your fundraiser. Reminding people of fundraisers and encouraging people through social posts is an extremely important way to ensure that your fundraiser is a success!

How can you make sure you are levering these platforms to ensure that you are getting maximum results? Stay tuned for weekly updates for Parent Groups go Social! Want more from Spirit Gear?
